Labour & Human Rights Assessment

We conduct labour rights audits/assessments when appropriate. Focus areas tend to be recruitment processes, compensation and working hours, freedom of movement, worker participation and engagement platforms, employment contracts and channels for workers to raise complaints without retaliation.

Where we find an issue, we try to work with the stakeholders involved to resolve it so as to improve the situation of the people affected. If a serious breach is found and no corrective action is taken, we reserve the right to terminate our contract.

The assessments focus on reviewing the Management Systems associated with Child labour, Forced Labour and Modern Slavery, Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining, Wages and Hours of Work, Health & Safety and Discrimination and Harassment with a lens of the following:

  • Company policies
  • Implementing procedures and structure
  • Training and development
  • Reporting and documentation
  • Review mechanism

Participatory Social Audits

Participatory Audit as a concept is based on engaging the key stakeholders in the entire audit process, not as participants but as core members of the audit team itself and to make the entire audit a facilitative and capacity building tool. In the entire process, importance is given on not only monitoring and identifying noncompliance together but also on facilitating internal capacity building on thematic issues as well as solution planning. The whole concept is built on the belief of dialogue and co-creation.

With an objective to mitigate the above gaps of a social audit, Paradigm Shift has been researching and piloting on revamping the entire audit approach itself while keeping the basic protocols intact. The fundamental question which we asked ourselves while coming up with this concept is “what if audits can be a facilitative and capacity building tool for change rather than a policing tool?” This was one fundamental change based on which Paradigm Shift came up with the concept of “Participatory Social Audit”.

  • Starts with setting up a respectful and inclusive dialogue platform
  • It invites all key stakeholders to have courageous conversations
  • Lead auditor plays a facilitator’s role and the audit is conducted by a core team of key stakeholders

    A. Management representatives

    B. Staff representatives

    C. Works Committee representatives

    D. Sample worker representatives

    E. Representatives from key strategic departments

    F. Trade union representative (wherever applicable)

  • Ensures that the following basic fundamental protocols are not compromised during the above change of approach:

    A. Being neutral

    B. Being objective

    C. Being critical

Environmental & Social Risk Management

The evaluation of social, economic, and environmental impacts of our actions are necessary to make effective operational and capital investment decisions that positively impact organizational objectives and meet the objectives of multiple stakeholders. As a result, we have incorporated Environmental & Social (E&S) risk considerations into our decision-making processes and developed a corporate policy that ensures that Funding/Investment Organizations or Bank does not finance or invest in activities that have negative environmental and social consequences.

This approach enables the funder/investor to consider its impacts on the environment and the society at large in its lending and investment decisions and also ensures that our risk management process is aligned with international best practice in this area. Furthermore, this is consistent with the investor’s/donor’s/bank's vision to build a world class risk management culture, in which risk is considered in all social or business decisions, where they are protected against negative social or environmental returns, media glare, civil society criticism, unforeseen losses, and maximizes its opportunities.

Ethical Sourcing and Supply Chain Management

We know that being a responsible corporate citizen is a dynamic process and we continually aim to improve and build upon our efforts in the area of ethical sourcing. We believe in the value of collaborating and sharing information to improve responsible sourcing efforts across the globe. Our team is well-equipped to identify areas for improvement in implementing the guidelines across the setup for a given organization.

We take a customizable and holistic approach to support our clients in developing their responsible sourcing program based on our client’s own business strategy and supply chain. Whether you want to build a responsible sourcing program from the ground up or are interested in improvement or innovation of an existing program, our strategic approach can help all companies address supply chain responsibility issues and fulfil corporate social responsibility goals.

Environmental Impact Assessment

Creation of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) system is vital to conform socio-economic development projects to environmental safety and thereby ensure sustainable economic development. It helps the planning and management to take long-term measures for effective management as well as environmental conservation.

The purpose of the EIA process is to inform decision-makers and the public of the environmental consequences of implementing a proposed project. The EIA document itself is a technical tool that identifies, predicts, and analyzes impacts on the physical environment, as well as social, cultural, and health impacts.
